YOUR WEEKLY UP-DATE

The ERC SEMINAR SERIES: #2 - this thursday, 3/11 - SignMeUp - Vinny Finneran, with his always-provocative and -humorous look at how to “Kick it Up a Notch” in training…if you haven’t met Vinny, don’t miss him!  Many thanks to Craig Strong for getting us excited and empowered in Seminar #1! If you’d like a copy of our Seminar Flyer for a nearby coffee shop, health club or relatives/friends let me know.

Morning Runners: Check it Out In your ERC membership registrations, several of you mentioned that you would like to run in the mornings.  Well, your running club has answered the call.  We will be starting a Tuesday morning run on April 6th at 5:30 AM at Greenleaf and the lakefront.   Nichelle Pajeau – ERC Run Coordinator – will “host” the new run group (already 7 people “signed on!”), so if you’re interested or have questions just click on her name and type away.  Please join us and get your Tuesday morning off to a great start!!

The Chili Run what a time we had!  Nancy and Carle Rollins were wonderful hosts for the “modern" Chili Run, first instituted in the 1970s-1980s when they were founding ERC members.  30 runners took part, along with several serving as course marshals or refueling coordinators. Chuck Janczy and Susan Lamon were the winners of the Predictor Run, coming in 1-min & 1:33 min off their prediction and walking away with a lovely gift certificate from Panera Bread. Photos can be found on the Lots of Fun page… enjoy! BTW, many folks remarked on how delish the spread was, so those who prepared chili, cornbread, cookies, guacamole, etc., please send me your recipes to share!

Wintervals Break: Is OVER, Now we’re back indoors for 3 more Sundays until OUTDOORS!

It’s Racing Season! 110 ERC folks took part in at least 1 CARA race in 2009! And, Dave Boyce, our CARA/Racing Coordinator reminds us all that “10 in 10 are under 10” – 10 Circuit races in 2010 are 10K or under, and 7 are 5-mi or less, so if you have even an inkling of coming out, contact Dave with questions… by our reckoning, if we had just 1 more runner in a few of our age-group categories, we might have won club awards in 2009. The CARA Runner’s Choice races and what I’ve called the Best of the Rest are all on the web page… check ‘em all out.

  • 3/27 - Des plaines river ½-marathon, Saturday, 9 AM, on the same trail course as the old Libertyville 1/2-marathon and it offers a team option for those who don’t want a full ½… try a 3.1, 4.3 or 6.5 run with ERC buddies or family members, in a team of 4, 3 or 2 people… fees are $45 for a solo runner or $28 per team member, but there’s a limit of 700 runners, so hurry!
  • 4/10 - Northwestern University benefit for Special Olympics: Annual Spring 5K Run/WalkSaturday, 9:30 AM. Fee is $15 for adults, $10 for NU students, meet on the south landfill.
  • CARA #2: 4/11 – The Race that’s good for life 5K – Sunday, Oak Park. NOTE START TIMES: 9 AM, Women’s; 9:50 Men’s.

Racing Season Singlet? Speaking of racing, Nancy Rollins thinks that ERC runners and racers might appreciate and proudly wear a new ERC Summer Singlet, made of the lightest-weight, wickiest-dry fabric and perhaps a new ERC Logo… please click on her name and let her know if a) you like the idea and/or b) you have ideas for the logo design.

It’s (almost) Spring… a party and the newsletter are coming up, April 25th - We’re looking for a party host (email me if you’d like to volunteer your home, unless I’ve already called you!) and put that date (Ravenswood Run day) on your calendar.  And, we’re thinking of two Newsletter ideas: 1) “My All-Time Favorite Run” wherein you wax eloquent about a run (not necessarily a race) truly memorable for its setting, your experience, camaraderie, etc., and 2) “Oh, My Aching…” and you fill in the blank about an injury you’ve successfully overcome. I get lots of questions from members about injuries and this would be a resource for us all.

Winter Running: Indoors? Dave Boyce spotted this item in the NYT on Indoor Running during these inclement months… pros and cons, people, pros and cons…. but thankfully it’s almost over!

new member “profiles– Both the 2009 and 2010 (so far) New Member Profiles are on the web site… but you’ll need the codes to get to this password-protected page… U/N: ERCRunner; P/W: SpotLight (case sensitive). And, if others of you are feeling forthcoming, there’s a link to the questions for you, too.

MEMBERSHIP: Please RENEW OR JOIN on-line, pay for track and check out our gear as well. If you have any questions about your status, the membership options or the track fees, please ask me.

  • 228 paid-up members at the end of 2009!
  • 35 NEW members so far this year! Say Hello to Keith Halley and Shiran Rachmilevitch who recently joined ERC!

Gotta run!

WISCONSIN MARATHON, SATURDAY MAY 1ST, NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Those of you who have volunteered at Chicago, or haven’t but would like to give it a try, will have a chance to hone your skills at the WISCONSIN MARATHON, MAY 1ST IN KENOSHA.  Tom Hepperle is asking ERC folks to help out as course marshals for their marathon.  READ MORE about it and/or SIGN UP as a volunteer. ERC volunteers will be assigned spots on the southern portion of the course, if at all possible.

OTHER IMPORTANT STUFF...

Evanston Volunteer Recognition Reception: 4/21, 6 PM, Norris Ctr – this is a Northwestern Student-run program that recognizes folks from the NU, ETHS and Evanston Communities for their volunteer efforts. Since ERC is very involved in all three communities, I plan to attend the event (yes, it is a Wed!) and would encourage others to attend with me.  They usually get 125-150 folks, including mayors, college presidents and other luminaries. It would be a great opportunity to “network” to find other ways for ERC to be involved. Let me know if you plan to attend!

Professional Partners Page… A new work in progress! We all need a little help to get by, now and again, right? This page on the ERC site features several folks who offer advice and services to our members, whom we have seen, met and/or used for a variety of club events, and who are members of the club.  The “Professional Partners” page has the latest info/offering from Dr. Tony Breitbach, Brian Kirshenbaum, Janis Luby, Gill Schumaker and Craig Strong.

They all offer programs or opportunities targeted to ERC members, and this week, Craig (Tri & ½-Marathon training), Gill (Rapid post-holiday weight-loss program), Dr. Tony (MMMM attendees, don’t forget your free Eat-/Move-/Think-Well assessment!) and Brian (new rates and services) announce special offers for members… check ‘em out!  Each of these folks also has an individual page on our site, accessible from the PP page, that tells you a little more about them.  Let me know what you think!
